Numerical Methods for the Simulation of Continuous Sedimentation in Ideal Clarifier-thickener Units

چکیده
We consider a model of continuous sedimentation. Under idealizing assumptions, the settling of the solid particles under the influence of gravity can be described by the initial value problem for a nonlinear hyperbolic partial differential equation with a flux function that depends discontinuously on height. The purpose of this contribution is to present and demonstrate two numerical methods for simulating continuous sedimentation: a front tracking method and a finite finite difference method. The basic building blocks in the front tracking method are the solutions of a finite number of certain Riemann problems and a procedure for tracking local collisions of shocks. The solutions of the Riemann problems are recalled herein and the front tracking algorithm is described. As an alternative to the front tracking method, a simple scalar finite difference algorithm is proposed. This method is based on discretizing the spatially varying flux parameters on a mesh that is staggered with respect to that of the conserved variable, resulting in a straightforward generalization of the well-known Engquist-Osher upwind finite difference method. The result is an easily implemented upwind shock capturing method. Numerical examples demonstrate that the front tracking and finite difference methods can be used as efficient and accurate simulation tools for continuous sedimentation. The numerical results for the finite difference method indicate that discontinuities in the local solids concentration are resolved sharply and agree with those produced by the front tracking method. The latter is free of numerical dissipation, which leads to sharply resolved concentration discontinuities, but is more complicated to implement than the former. Available mathematical results for the proposed numerical methods are also briefly reviewed.

Numerical simulation of clarifier-thickener units treating ideal suspensions with a flux density function having two inflection points
Abstract. We consider a nonconvex conservation law modelling the settling of particles in ideal clarifier-thickener units. The flux function of this conservation law has an explicit spatial dependence that is discontinuous. Previous works by two of the authors, together with collaborators, have been aimed at providing a firm rigorous ground of mathematical (global existence and uniqueness) and ...
متن کاملA Regulator for Continuous Sedimentation in Ideal Clarifier-Thickener Units
Abstract. The purpose of this paper is to present a regulator for control of the continuous-sedimentation process in a clarifier-thickener unit when this is modelled in one space dimension and when the settling properties of the solids obey Kynch’s assumption. The model is a scalar hyperbolic conservation law with space-discontinuous flux function and point source. The most desired type of solu...
متن کاملA Model of Continuous Sedimentation of Flocculated Suspensions in Clarifier-Thickener Units
The chief purpose of this paper is to formulate and partly analyze a new mathematical model for continuous sedimentation-consolidation processes of flocculated suspensions in clarifierthickener units. This model appears in two variants for cylindrical and variable cross-sectional area units, respectively (Models 1 and 2). In both cases, the governing equation is a scalar, strongly degenerate pa...
متن کاملSecond-order schemes for conservation laws with discontinuous flux modelling clarifier-thickener units
Continuously operated clarifier-thickener units can be modeled by a non-linear, scalar conservation law with a flux that involves two parameters that depend discontinuously on the space variable. This paper presents two numerical schemes for the solution of this equation that have formal second-order accuracy in both the time and space variable. One of the schemes is a standard total variation ...
متن کاملOperating charts for continuous sedimentation II: step responses
Abstract. The process of continuous sedimentation of particles in a liquid has often been predicted by means of operating charts and mass-balance considerations, where the underlying constitutive assumption is the one by Kynch. Much more complex operating charts (concentration-flux diagrams) can be obtained from a onedimensional model of an ideal continuous clarifier-thickener unit. The enginee...
